Believing What You Cannot See

Of the stories about Christ’s appearances after His resurrection, one stands out as my favorite – the story of “doubting Thomas.” Thomas, one of Christ’s Apostles, was not with the other Apostles when Jesus appeared to them.  They tried to tell Thomas what had happened, but he would not believe, saying:

“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”  -John 20:25, NAB

For Thomas, it was too hard to believe.  Even after all he had seen Christ do, he still could not believe that Christ had risen from the dead, but, a week later, Christ would change all that.  Thomas and the disciples were together again, and Christ appeared to them.  He challenged Thomas to put his fingers where the nails had been and in His side, and Thomas immediately believed.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you come to believe because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.'”  -John 20:29, NAB

Like Thomas, we fall into the same trap.  We want to see God in our lives to believe in Him.  Much of our society does not believe in God because they refuse to believe in what they cannot see.  They want to see Him, touch Him, and feel Him, but they can’t.  Like Thomas, the world is waiting for proof that He exists.  Even as believers, we can falter in our faith.  We struggle to put our trust and faith in the God we cannot see.  We believe in Him; we simply don’t have faith in Him.  Instead, we put our faith and trust in the things of this world, the things we can control ourselves, and we often fall short because of it.

It has been said that having faith in God is like believing in the wind.  You cannot see the wind, but you can see it move the trees.  You cannot touch the wind, but you can feel it blowing against your skin.  The wind is not something you can hold, touch, see, or feel, but you can see the effect it has on the world around us.  Faith in Our Lord is much the same.  You cannot touch Him, or feel Him, or grab Him by the hand, but you can see what He is doing in your life.  It may be hard to see, but, if you pay close attention, you can see the effect He has on our lives.

Can you see Him in your life?  Can you feel Him pulling at your heart?  I can.  I can see the blessings that only He could bring.  I can touch the beautiful world that He has created for me.  I can hear Him talking to me in the quiet of my mind.  I can feel Him pulling at the very essence of my soul, guiding me to a better life.  But, to hear, see, touch, or feel Him, we need to let go of the noise of this world and listen to His quiet whispers that only our soul can hear.

What’s Next?

For the next few weeks, we will be looking at the 40 days Christ spent on Earth after His resurrection and before His ascension to heaven.  Then, that will lead us directly into Pentecost.  Some great material coming up!
