Armor of God…
The battle for souls has been raging since the dawn of time; therefore, we must put on the armor of God:
Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. -Ephesians 6:10-13, NAB
Over the next few days, as we bring our study of Ephesians to a close, we will look at the individual pieces of the armor of God in verses 6:14-17. Until then, St. Paul tells us why we must prepare ourselves for battle.
We may not like to think much about the devil, evil spirits, and their effects on our lives, but they are very real. They are not just a metaphorical reference for evil. When we choose to believe that the devil is not real, we are giving in to the one lie that he wants us to believe the most.
Wars rage on across the planet, and the battle between good and evil can be seen everywhere. Sometimes, though, the battle rages in unexpected places. Evil exists all over the world; we do not need to be in a war-torn country to find it.
In the Western world, we can see the effects of evil, the work of the devil, in a society that is rejecting God in favor of greed, lust, and worldly desires. Evil disguises itself as freedom, and we must be wary not to fall into its trap.
We cannot resist the lies and temptations of the devil on our own; we need the protection of God. For that reason, God gives us spiritual armor – the armor of God. With God’s help, we can resist evil ways and help win the ongoing war for souls.
The battle for your soul continues, and temptation is a mighty foe. Put on the armor of God and resist the evil ways of the devil. The Lord will give you the strength and fortitude needed to win the war.
