Our Words Become Our Actions…

St. Paul gives us a stern warning against speaking profanely:

Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones, no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving. -Ephesians 5:3-4, NAB

Our words can have a greater impact than we sometimes give them credit for, and the impact is not only on the people around us, but on ourselves, as well.  The words we use reflect who we are, yet they can also shape who we are at the same time.

Standing around the water cooler telling dirty jokes with our coworkers is not going to lead us to a more saintly life.  Likewise, standing there listening to someone else do it will not be much help either.

Of course, this warning is not limited to telling jokes.  Every conversation we have can lead us to sin.  When we gossip, talk about our attraction to someone in a graphic way, or share tales of our misdeeds, our words will not bring us, or anyone else, closer to Christ.

As we allow ourselves to speak more sinfully, our lives will naturally become more sinful.  Our thoughts and words become our actions and choices.  At the same time, if we choose positive thoughts and words, they will lead to saintly actions.

Tired of making bad choices?  Looking to turn your life around?  Do you want to leave sin behind?  Well, it doesn’t begin with your actions and deeds; it begins with the words you choose, so choose your words carefully.
