Imitators of God…

Live as Christ lives.  Love as Christ loves.  Forgive as Christ forgives:

So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. -Ephesians 5:1-2, NAB

Imitators of God?  Is that even possible?  Some may think that it is heretical to be an imitator of God, but it is only heretical if we try to be God, instead of trying to be like God.

How can we imitate the all-powerful, all-knowing, invisible God?  It is hard to even describe God in words, let alone find a way to imitate Him.  It was for this very reason that He sent His Son to live among us: to give us an example to follow.

Christ’s entire life, from His humble beginnings in a manger, to His sacrificial death on the cross, serves as an example for us to follow.  By reading the Gospels, we can see the footsteps of Jesus and learn how to follow the same path.

Of course, we will fall short of being fully Christ-like.  Think of an artificial sweetener.  It looks like sugar, and it makes things sweet, but it doesn’t quite taste like sugar.  Why?  Because it’s not sugar – it’s an imitation.  An imitation may never be as good as the real thing, but it doesn’t mean that it can’t come close.

Be an imitator of God, as best as you can.  You may fall short of being the real thing, but you can do your best to come close.
