Jesus Christ, Head of the Church…
God sent His Son to rule over mankind as the Head of the Church:
And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. -Ephesians 1:22-23, NAB
The Lord has appointed the Bishop of Rome, Pope Benedict XVI, to lead the Church in this world, but Jesus Christ Himself continues to be the Head of the Church in this world and in the next, as well as the Ruler of all mankind.
Many will incorrectly claim that Catholics somehow make a deity out of the pope, lifting him to a place of worship; however, make no mistake, the Catholic Church still recognizes that we are mere mortals, and Christ is our one, true King.
St. Paul tells us that Christ has “put all things beneath his feet;” in other words, He has established His power and dominion over the world. As His body, He delegates that authority and power to His Church; therefore, our Catholic leaders are called to continue the mission He began two millennia ago.
Like any ruler, Christ has His emissaries, whom He has appointed for special duties. The pope, as Christ’s chief emissary, is called to lead us in communion with Christ, to help us become faithful members of Christ’s royal court.
The world may continue to reject the authority of Christ, His Church, and the successors of the Apostles (our pope and bishops), but the day will come when every knee will bow to the one, true King: Jesus Christ.
