There are few things more valuable than an educated faith:
Hold fast to instruction, never let her go; keep her, for she is your life. -Proverbs 4:13, NAB
What do I mean by an educated faith? We need to know and understand what we believe. It is not enough to blindly believe something because this kind of faith is easily shaken. Understanding why we believe something helps our faith take deeper roots in our lives.
Education, in my opinion, is a priority for all of us. Now, this does not mean that we all have to have a formalized education – we’re not required to have a Masters in Theology to become Catholic. However, that does not mean that we need to be ignorant about our faith.
Educating ourselves can be as simple as reading a book, listening to a CD, watching a DVD, taking part in a Bible study, researching our faith online, or simply paying attention to the weekly homily. There are a number of great ways to learn and grow in wisdom.
Waking Up Catholic, the book, the website, and the ministry as a whole, are geared to be the first step in that process, but it should not end there. I hope that you read other books, visit more websites, and look to other fantastic ministries that can help you develop your faith even deeper.
An educated faith is a faith that endures. It overcomes all doubts or attacks by false teaching. Wisdom is the key to building a spiritual life that can weather any storm.
