Like a Thief…

When will the Lord come again?  We will never know:

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.” -2 Peter 3:10, NAB

There are many who have tried to predict when Christ will come again.  The first century Christians thought that they would see Christ come back in their lifetime.  At the turn of the first millenium, once again, people wondered if He would return.  It really began to become a societal topic back in the 19th and 20th centuries.  Yet, here we are today, and we are still waiting.

There have been a number of predictions about when Christ will come again, and they make predictions that never come true.  Right now, the hysteria is about 2012  because the Mayan calendar ends next year.  Unfortunately, it’s hard to find any Mayans to explain to us why the calendar is ending.  In the end, it is just a way to stir up a frenzy in all of us so that we can be sold more books, History Channel documentaries, and movie tickets.

People often speak about Judgment Day, the end of the world, and other apocalyptic future events.  They cite Nostradamus, Revelations, and a host of other historical texts.  Most of these texts, when you read them, are clear as mud.  The symbolism and imagery used does not give a concrete, clear picture of exactly what will happen.  I have read a number of different theories, many are similar, but a lot is left up to interpretation.  Instead of leaning on one interpretation or another, I think that I will just wait to see what happens, but if I chose one interpretation, I think I would follow the Catholic vision (a concensus of theories from numerous scholars over a number of centuries).

Are you waiting for the Lord to come again?  You should be.  We are told, a few times in the Bible, that we should always be prepared for the Lord’s return, but do not get caught up with those trying to predict when it will happen.  Do not give up your life savings because someone told you to move to the mountains to escape the end times.  Will Christ come again?  Yes.  Do we know when?  No.  If we know anything, we know that it will come when we least expect it.
