2 Peter 1:5-7
Peter shares with us the way to attain a life closer to Christ:
“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.” -2 Peter 1:5-7, NAB
One of the biggest fads of the exercise and weight loss market is vitamins and supplements. Fitness companies and retailers will convince you that they will help you run faster, train harder, and lose weight faster than simple exercise alone. Well, Peter has the same prescription for us. While exercising our faith is great for our spiritual life, he offers spiritual supplements to increase our spiritual abilities.
Each one of the supplements he mentions builds on the last: virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, devotion, mutual affection, and love. We begin with faith and add to it virtue. Those two will do fine, but they will be even better if we add knowledge. We keep doing this until we reach the final supplement – love. With each one of these supplements, our spiritual life continues to deepen and grow stronger.
The supplements all offer different value to our spiritual bodies, just as different dietary supplements work. Some dietary supplements help us to burn fat. Others serve to give us more energy during a workout. Still others are there simply to help us recover. Peter’s spiritual supplements can do the same thing. Self-control helps us to burn off the spiritual fat in our lives. Endurance will give us the energy to make it through any spiritual battle. And, our devotion will help us to recover faster after long spiritual workouts.
Are you spiritually strong? Are you ready to run a spiritual marathon? We work hard on our bodies to keep them in shape, and we should do the same for our spiritual bodies as well. Beyond normal spiritual exercise, Peter gives us ways to supplement our lives in a way to take our Christian faith to another level. Take your faith to the next level. By adding the spiritual supplements of virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, devotion, mutual affection, and love, we can strengthen our faith beyond anything we could ever imagine.
