Finding Encouragement

Before we move on to the second chapter of 1 Corinthians, I want to share a verse from 2 Corinthians.  It parallels much of what is seen from 1 Corinthians, but it builds on what we have already learned.  In 1 Corinthians, Paul preludes his letter by speaking to them about wisdom; here, he speaks about God’s encouragement:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement, who encourages us in our every affliction, so that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God. For as Christ’s sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow.”  -2 Corinthians 1:3-5, NAB

Pain and suffering, unfortunately, are a fact of life.  No matter how hard we try to avoid it, we will face our share of trials.  Yet, while we stand in the face of trials, Christ is there to encourage us; He is there to help pull us through.  Struggles can cause anyone to fall, but a Christian has Christ there to pick them up.  And, as others see Christ working in our lives, we are able to share that same love and encouragement with them.  The Lord encourages us so much that it overflows us; it is more encouragement than one person needs.  You will face suffering.  You will face obstacles and affliction.  But, Christ will be there for you, and, as others see the work Christ is doing in your life, His encouragement will be there for them as well.  Be an example for others.  There are few things worse than a Catholic, or Christian, that praises His name through all of their blessings, but deny Him in their sufferings.  When you face affliction, stay true to your faith.  Allow Christ and the Holy Spirit to work in your life, and when their encouragement begins to overflow you, go and find someone who could use a little encouragement of their own.

NOTE:  This was a bit of an OOPS!  I originally planned to write on 1 Corinthians 2:3-5, but I looked at my notes wrong and wrote on 2 Corinthians 1:3-5.  I apologize about the confusion, but I will leave this up here nonetheless.
