1 Peter 2:19
The Grace of Suffering…
Sometimes our suffering is our blessing:
“For whenever anyone bears the pain of unjust suffering because of consciousness of God, that is a grace.” -1 Peter 2:19, NAB
Look at the life of any saint, and it is one that is wrought with suffering. They did not live quiet, peaceful, easy lives. Instead, their lives were often marked with large challenges, extreme obstacles, and unbelievable pain and suffering. It is their perseverance through that pain and suffering that is what qualifies them as a saint in the first place.
We may not see it at the time, but our suffering brings many graces into our lives. Like the saints, our faith is tested and purified by the fires of anguish, and we grow closer to the Lord through them. Do not run from suffering, but face it head on. Take on the challenges that life brings you, and it will be worth it in the end.
In the past year, I have faced many obstacles. On my path to a closer relationship with Christ, I have met obstacles along the way – often times from unexpected directions. As I came closer and closer to the life that Christ was calling me to live, I seemed to be meeting greater and greater opposition. This time of suffering has challenged my faith in many ways, and I can look back at the blessings that it has brought to my life.
As Catholics, there are those who will question your actions. They will ridicule you, mock you, and even publicly defame you. Do not fear the actions of those who live in this world. Instead, trust in the Lord to bring you through. No matter what suffering you may face in this world, it cannot compare to the grace that the Lord will bring.
