Spiritual Vocabulary…

When we are reaching out to the world through evangelism, sometimes, we must meet them where they are:

“Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew to win over Jews; to those under the law I became like one under the law – though I myself am not under the law – to win over those under the law. To those outside the law I became like one outside the law – though I am not outside God’s law but within the law of Christ – to win over those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.”  -1 Corinthians 9:19-23, NAB

One of the most common mistakes that a Christian can make when evangelizing is talking to someone as if they are already a Christian.  Our faith and beliefs are elementary to who we are as Christians, and those truths seem self-evident.  In other words, we assume that because it is so easy for us to understand, that they will understand it in the same way.  But, we must remember that it probably did not always come so easily for us either.  When we are teaching children to read and write, we must begin with words and phrases that are in their vocabulary.  From there, we hope to deepen their knowledge and strengthen their vocabulary.  The same is true with faith.  We cannot reveal the deepest mysteries of faith and expect the average person to understand them.  Instead, we must begin with the basics and try to deepen their knowledge later – that is exactly what Waking Up Catholic seeks out to do.

There is more that we can learn from these verses, and we will learn more about them tomorrow…
