1 Corinthians 9:14
Practice What You Preach…
Today’s verse should challenge us as it challenged Paul:
“…the Lord ordered that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel.” -1 Corinthians 9:14, NAB
The context of this verse still involves supporting the apostles, today’s bishops and priests, but this statement really stands out. To “practice what you preach” has become a phrase that we hear often, but it is especially important when we say it about our faith. The most damaging blows to Christianity come from Christians themselves who preach one thing, but do another. People will not only listen to the impact faith has on our lives, but also see what that faith can do through us. Often times, what we do can be more important than what we say.
Christ has commanded us to live out our faith daily, not just on Sundays. We cannot be one person on Sunday and another on Monday. Let the goodness of the Lord shine through you. Do not be someone who preaches the good news but fails to live it; instead, stop preaching and let people see the good news by your example. We can win more souls to Christ in the streets and in our communities than we can from any pulpit. As the saying goes, “You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” You can. All you need to do is follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
