1 Corinthians 6:19
Guarding the Temple…
Once again, Paul tells us that our body is a temple:
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” -1 Corinthians 6:19, NAB
When we attend Mass each week, many people put on a different persona. They walk through the front doors of their parish, and they act completely different than outside of church. They talk different, dress different, and even act different. Somehow, they feel as if they are in “God’s house” and should be acting differently, but Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Why then do we act differently inside the four walls of the parish? Who we are inside the parish should reflect who we are outside the parish.
In this verse, Paul is specifically talking about the purity of our bodies in a sexual way. Being sexually pure can be a tough concept to grasp. What is the exact definition of “sexually pure?” We have all wondered that question at one time or another. Well, I have a simple test for you. If you want to know if something is right or wrong, ask yourself, would you tell your local priest about it? Would you tell your mother? Without being descriptive, no one would be shocked that you are having relations with your spouse. But, what about everything else? Are you ashamed? Chances are, if you are ashamed of it, you probably should not be doing it. While this is not a steadfast rule, it often works. Why does it work? Because the Holy Spirit dwells within your body, the temple, and He guides us by way of our conscience. What is He telling you?
