1 Corinthians 6:12
Lawful, But Not Beneficial…
Much like our society today, the Corinthians had an entitlement problem. Paul challenged them:
“‘Everything is lawful for me,’ but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is lawful for me,’ but I will not let myself be dominated by anything.” -1 Corinthians 6:12, NAB
Today, we feel that we are entitled to a great many things. And by our laws, there is nothing stopping us. Our free will, which is given by God, allows us to make our own choices in life, but we should not simply indulge in everything that we choose to. As society’s views have changed about morality, it is now freely acceptable in our society to live rather immoral lives. While the laws of man may make these things acceptable, it does not mean that they benefit us. Only the Law of God can truly be beneficial to us. For example, many people will tell you that it is a good idea to live together first because you will truly know if you were meant to be with someone. Meanwhile, divorce rates continue to climb in our country. Society will also tell us that abortion is an acceptable alternative to practicing the only safe sex -chastity. Meanwhile, women all over the world struggle with the shame and guilt of an abortion they chose so long ago. The laws of man are flawed; the Laws of God are perfect. When we follow His Law, it is not simply because he told us so, but because we understand the value of His Laws. Like a parent who teaches a young child not to touch the stove, we may not understand why we are being taught this, but we will find out when we get burned. God, our Father, is protecting us. Do not feel that following His Laws are limiting you in any way when, in many ways, they are opening you to limitless opportunities of love and grace.
