1 Corinthians 16:22
In the midst of love, we find harsh words:
“If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed.” -1 Corinthians 16:22, NAB
It’s simple. Love the Lord, and you will find the path to heaven. Deny the Lord, and you will not. As we begin to wrap up our look at 1 Corinthians, Paul seems to change his tone, even if for just one verse. While he continues to speak about love, he is not afraid to point out the truth.
If people choose to deny the Lord, if they choose not to love Him, they will be separated from Him when judgment comes. Without Christ in their life, they will face the full judgment of God at their death. While the best part of Christianity is spreading the love of Christ, there is also the harsh reality of those who choose to refuse it.
Christ’s love is freely given, but it must be accepted. In today’s society, many people reject His love for worldly pursuits. They choose money, career, power, lust, and a number of other desires over the Lord. They reject Him here so that they can live a life full of treasures on earth. But, when they get to heaven, Christ will reject them, and they will live eternity without the treasures in heaven. There is no sugarcoating that basic, simple truth. What reward is there in righteousness if even the wicked shall be saved?
Some believe in a teaching, their own version of Christ, where everyone is forgiven, regardless of their life here on earth. While I would not be surprised if our Lord showed this kind of love and mercy, we are told that this will not happen. If someone chooses to roll the dice, deny Christ, and hope He will forgive them anyway, that is a chance they are taking by themselves. Remember Christ’s words:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” -John 14:6
Have you truly accepted Christ into your life? Choose to love the Lord, and I promise, He will love you back.
