1 Corinthians 16:14
What should be at the center of all that we do?
“Your every act should be done with love.” -1 Corinthians 16:14, NAB
This one, simple verse sums up so many other statements of how we should live out our faith. Time and time again in the Gospels, Paul’s letters, and the rest of the New Testament, we are taught about the beauty and the power of love. Saying it is one thing; doing it is another.
Too often, when we think of love, we think of those closest to us. We love our mothers and fathers. We love our spouses. We love our children. But, love is more than the feelings that we share for these special people in our lives; love should be the source of all that we do. No matter who we may be dealing with, we should show them the same love Christ did. While sitting in traffic, we should show love to the other motorists. While waiting in line at the DMV, we should wait patiently out of love. No matter the situation, we should show love.
We are often measured, even if we don’t know it, by the love that we show the world. Even if we show large, great acts of love, they will be overshadowed by the little, everyday acts of life where we don’t show love. We cannot be a scoundrel 90% of the time, but then expect people to be inspired by us because of one big act of love. It is similar to our relationship with our spouses. We cannot be the most loving person on holidays like Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day, and our Anniversary, but then be awful the rest of the year. The love we show on those holidays will easily be overshadowed by the love we fail to show the rest of the year. We must live out our faith, through love, in every single moment of our lives.
Showing love begins with the smallest decisions in life. Step by step, day by day, we have to retrain our hearts and our minds to focus on love. While our first reaction may be to follow our own selfish desires, we must ensure that we focus on the needs of others instead. Retrain your brain. Listen to your heart. Follow the ways of Christ. He will show you the way.
