1 Corinthians 13:1-3
No matter what we do, if we do it without love in our hearts, it means nothing:
“If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.” -1 Corinthians 13:1-3, NAB
God may give us a variety of spiritual gifts, and we may use them in many ways. But, in today’s verse, Paul tells us that if we use our gifts without love in our heart, then it means very little. For, Christ gave us these gifts to share His love with the world. If we do not have love in our hearts, it would be impossible to share Christ’s love with anyone.
How does this apply to our lives? Simple. When we work at the homeless shelter, we must love and accept those coming to receive help, no matter what brought them there. When we stand in front of a class, we must pour all we have into our teaching, no matter how many people are actually listening. And, when we are with our family and friends, we must share our faith with them openly, no matter whether they receive it with open arms or not.
In everything that you do, from the smallest task to the largest project, make sure that Christ’s love is at the center of it. Whether we are at home, church, or even at work, we should do all things through the love of Christ. We are a reflection of Christ and His love for the world, and our actions are how the outside world sees that love. In all that you do, let Christ’s love shine through.
