1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Our spiritual gifts come from the Lord:
“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” -1 Corinthians 12:4-6, NAB
Everyone, yes everyone, has been given spiritual gifts from God. They come in all shapes and colors, and in many smells and flavors. Each one of us has a unique set of gifts that was given only to us, and they were given to us directly from God. Yet, we often look more at who we are not, instead of who we are.
God has called me to write, not because I have any special ability; I only have what He has given me. Whether my writing ever makes it from the computer screen to the printed page is not for me to know. I may hope for it to be so, but I can only walk through the doors He opens for me. Now, some may wish that they had the gift of writing, or they may wish to be a great speaker, teacher, or preacher. But, if you were not given those gifts, do not worry. We cannot be who we are not called to be; we can only be who God wants us to be.
In the next few verses, we will discuss what gifts are available to us. Take time to find your spiritual gifts, whatever they may be. While the writers, speakers, and preachers of the world get the most press, it is the larger majority of people using a variety of other skills that makes the Church truly function. There would be no pulpit if human hands didn’t create it. There would be no printed pages if human hands did not publish it. Behind every great speaker, writer, and preacher is a fabulous team of people working hard to make their message come through.
We are all called to use our gifts in a way pleasing to God. Do not focus on the gifts that you don’t have; instead, focus on the gifts that you do have and how you can serve the Kingdom of Heaven.
