1 Corinthians 10:23
What is Beneficial?…
Have you ever tried bargaining with the Lord?
“‘Everything is lawful,’ but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is lawful,’ but not everything builds up.” -1 Corinthians 10:23, NAB
We have all been there. You are presented with a decision to make, and one of the options is on the borderline of being right or wrong. Technically speaking, it may not exactly be a sin in itself, but it may not be something that will help us in the long run either. We begin bargaining with God as we try to justify to ourselves why we should allow ourselves to do it; however, bargaining with God never really turns out how we expect.
Even if something is “lawful,” we should not do it if it is not beneficial to us, and more importantly, if it does the opposite. Often times, we do not fall to a sinful lifestyle in one fell swoop; it usually happens gradually as we walk the fine lines of whether something is lawful or not. By avoiding those gray areas of life and standing firm on only what is beneficial and builds us up, we are setting a solid foundation for the rest of our lives. Otherwise, we are building our foundations on quicksand, and we will slowly begin to be swallowed up by temptation and sin. Avoid the quicksand and build your life on the solid rock of the Church and your faith in Jesus Christ.
