1 Corinthians 10:17
In Christ, we are one body; we are only divided by the temptations of this world:
“Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” -1 Corinthians 10:17, NAB
Many times in the Bible, we are taught that we are one body of believers. The context of this passage is surrounded by warnings against idolatry and false gods. Looking at ourselves as one body of believers in this context, we can see that it is the things of this world that try to divide us, and we must avoid them to act as one body. So then, we must be careful not to allow the society in which we live and our differences in belief be the cause of our division.
Many do not realize the false idols that we worship. In Western society, there are many things that have become idols in our lives, including money, power, lust, and even our own image. Because of our weakness, it divides us as a body of believers, beyond the Catholic Church and into Christianity itself. In our attempt to satisfy the needs of our flesh, we allow ourselves to be separated. Christ wants nothing more than for us to be united under Him, but to do so, we have to let go of the world first.
