Learning from the Example of Others…

In the Old Testament, we follow Moses as he leads the Jews to the promised land.  Unfortunately, they had a few missteps along the way:

“I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert. These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did.”  -1 Corinthians 10:1-6, NAB

Even after Christ came, the apostles still followed the teachings and lessons that can be found in the books of the Old Testament, and they are referenced many times in the New Testament.  This story serves as an example of exactly what not to do, and Paul is pointing that out to the people of Corinth.  Though they had been delivered from Egypt, the Jewish people soon began to stray away from God again.  Too often, we find ourselves falling into the same trap.  We may remain faithful for a time, but we eventually begin to stray again.

At times, we all make mistakes, but the only tragedy is when we do not learn from them.  Our true aim should be to learn from the mistakes of others so that we never make the same mistakes ourselves.  We have seen others stray from God and the disastrous results it can bring, and we have learned the hard way through our own mistakes, yet we continue to stray anyway.  Through diligence, we can focus on not making those same mistakes repeatedly.  Scripture teaches us the ways of the Lord through the examples of those who came before us.  Instead of following in the footsteps of the fallen, our goal should be to walk in the shadows of the enlightened.
